The Whitewater Whippets girls' basketball team tipped off their season against Marshall this past Tuesday. Marshall, the 2nd seeded team last year in the state tournament playoff series (behind Whitewater), proved a tough opponent against the Whippets. In the end, it was Marshall who pulled ahead for a final score of 66-60. The Whippets outscored the Cardinals in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cardinals who were shooting threes all over the Whippets zone defense. With five players in foul trouble, the Whippets had to go into their bench late in this very close game. Myriama Smith-Traore had a double-double (20 points and 12 rebounds), and Rebekah Schumacher had 15 points and 4 assists. Their next game is this Friday at Stoughton.
In JV action, it was a nail biter to the final buzzer. With a minute left, the Whippets were down by three. With about 45 seconds on the clock, the Marshall Cardinals fouled Alyssa Schumacher. Schumacher went to the line sinking both shots and making it a one-point game. After a nice defensive play, the Whippets got the ball and Emma Sellnow made a nice pass that bounced off the hands of a Cardinal and landed in the hands of Brianna Tillett, who made the open lay-up that took the lead with 20 seconds left. After the game, Tillett said, “I was really scared it wasn't going to go in, and then when it did, it was actually even more scary because it got really loud.” In desperation, the Cardinals took a three and missed. Schumacher grabbed the rebound, drove it up the court, and was fouled by a Cardinal. She sank the second free throw with 3.6 seconds left to seal the win for the Whippets 56-55. Tillett said after the game, “I think our team played really well together, and I'm happy we won. We kept our cool even when we were down, and I think that really helped us.”
